BELL X1

Rating: NN

Just because England is crazy about a band doesn’t mean we have to like them, too. Irish darlings Bell X1 have been making serious waves since they released Flock, their third record, in the UK in 2006. Now it’s finally getting released here.

At the time, their Radiohead-meets-Franz Ferdinand sound kind of made sense. The band’s hit, Flame, a disco-beat indie-rocker and the catchiest track here, propelled the foursome into the spotlight. But today the song sounds like it’s been done a thousand times before. The frustratingly overwrought Coldplay-lite Eve, The Apple Of My Eye, is better suited to a romantic comedy starring Dane Cook than to a supposedly inspiring album.

Hopefully, Canadian audiences won’t be fooled by the British hype, because Bell X1 don’t have what it takes to win over the Great White North.

Bell X1 play the El Mocambo March 12.
