TikTok’s latest viral sensation, the Savannah Bananas, are not your average baseball team – with both hits and flips, the entertainment group is bringing their pitch-perfect performances and plays to Canada next year.
Spanning millions of views and likes, the Bananas brought show-stopping, Broadway-like performances to Savannah, Georgia’s Historic Grayson Stadium, even roping in some familiar faces, including Kristen Bell and Andy Grammer.
The games mix pop culture, complex choreography, and baseball with specialized rules in the span of two hours. The team especially stood out online with their choreographed dance numbers and trending songs.
The Bananas are a part of a six-team league called the Banana Ball Championship League (BBCL).
The BBCL was originally announced on Oct. 3, 2024, and officially began its inaugural league season in 2026. The Bananas themselves first played as part of a collegiate summer baseball team from 2016 to 2022.
The other teams involved include the Party Animals, who are the Bananas’ official rival team, the Firefighters, the Texas Tailgaters, the Loco Beach Coconuts, and the Indianapolis Clowns.
Banana Ball game rules
The BBCL strives to keep games at a maximum of two hours, done so by changing the traditional rules of baseball into an 11-point Banana Ball system.
Rules include:
- Every inning is worth one point. The team that gets the most runs in an inning gets a point, except for the last inning, when every run counts.
- No new inning can be started after the slated two hours. In the last inning of the game, every run counts.
- If the hitter steps out of the box, it’s a strike.
- If a hitter bunts a pitch, they are removed from the game.
- On any pitch of an at-bat, the hitter can try to steal first base, including on a passed ball or wild pitch.
- Ball four becomes a sprint. The hitter will take off running while every defensive player on the field must touch the ball before it becomes live. The hitter may advance to as many bases as they want. The ball does not have to touch the catcher or pitcher.
- No mound visits from the coach, catcher, or any other player at any time.
- If a fan catches a foul ball, it’s an out. It needs to be a clean catch. No bobbles or juggling.
- If the game is tied at the end of the two-hour time limit, the game will go into a “Showdown Tiebreaker.”
- Each team is allowed to challenge a ruling on the field. In addition to each team’s challenge, the fans will have one opportunity to challenge a ruling during the game.
- Once per game, a team may send any hitter in the lineup to bat in any spot.
These rules speed up the game and make it more fair and interactive.
Fans react to Canadian tour stops
Following its virality on social media, with the team amassing more than 347.3 million likes on their TikTok page, the Savannah Bananas, as well as the rest of the BBCL, announced they’d be going on their first Banana Ball World Tour in 2027, with 180 games.
Toronto and Winnipeg were able to snag multiple dates, with the Bananas expected to play and perform at the Rogers Centre against the Indianapolis Clowns on Aug. 14 and 15, while the Party Animals are playing against the Texas Tailgaters at Blue Cross Park and Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg on Aug. 26 and 28.
The Banana Ball announcement made Canadian fans feel like they hit a home run.
“OMG, WE WILL BE ATTENDING!” one X user wrote.
“I want to go so badly!” another X user said.
Despite being a U.S. team and league, it was evident the Bananas made waves across the border.
It was especially a pleasant surprise for some fans to see the league was playing in Winnipeg, a city often overlooked by entertainment groups.
“Props to not just doing Toronto, but doing a smaller city,” one X user wrote.
“This is awesome, cool to see the Peg get a game,” another stated.
For now, fans wanting to check out the men in electric yellow can sign up for a chance to attend through their lottery system on the Savannah Bananas website by Oct. 31 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Ticket sales are expected at a later, undisclosed date.
