Death Grips – No Love Deep Web

DEATH GRIPS play Wrongbar Sunday (November 18). See listing. Rating: NNNN

Erratic noise rap group Death Grips’ No Love Deep Web is ugly, annoying and perfect for this moment in history. It’s more punk rock than any current album with guitars, but it’s all about unfocused, unhinged, paranoid rage instead of anything resembling a political message. Nihilism doesn’t even begin to describe the mood created by the skittering electronic drums, uneasy atmospheric noises and MC Ride’s manic scream-rapping.

It’s almost unfortunate that the music itself has been overshadowed by the band’s self-sabotaging antics, but their behaviour fits in with their overall aesthetic perfectly. To recap: they abruptly cancelled their last tour a few dates in, put a photo of an erect penis on the cover of their album, released the album for free on their website against the wishes of their label, released private angry emails from Epic to the press and were then dropped by the label. Who knows how they ended up on a major label in the first place? But someone should probably thank Epic for paying for this.
