Ron Sexsmith – Long Player Late Bloomer

RON SEXSMITH hits Lee’s Palace April 21. See listing. Rating: NNN

Ron Sexsmith has never really broken through on a mainstream level despite critical acclaim, praise from superstars like Elton John and Paul McCartney and consistently strong records. He’s hoping to change that pattern with Long Player Late Bloomer by bringing in heavyweight producer Bob Rock to sprinkle some radio-friendly pixie dust on the recording.

The results aren’t a drastic departure from the low-key roots pop sound Sexsmith is known for, but the production definitely has a more commercial feel. You can still get some of that personal feeling from Sexsmith’s voice and songwriting, even if the backing tracks seem a little too manicured and glossy. But, frankly, if you’re already a fan, it’s hard not to miss the tender intimacy of his previous albums. To Rock’s credit, his touches don’t actually get in the way of the songs, and hopefully his tweaks are just what Sexsmith needs to garner the support he deserves.
