A comedy show fundraiser for Daily Bread Food Bank is happening on December 19.

Canned Laughter will take place at Comedy Bar on Bloor Street, and aims to give back to the city of Toronto by bringing awareness to food insecurity with a night of laughs, top-notch stand-up and generosity.

The show will be divided into two sections, with 100 per cent of ticket sales going directly to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Part one, The Christmas Comedy Classic, will see eight up-and-coming comedians take the stage in front of industry heavyweights for a chance to secure spots at renowned professional shows across the city.

The second half of the show, The Greatest Stand-Up Show You’ll Ever See, Ever! will feature Darrin Rose, Jean Paul, Ali Hassan, Fiona O’Brien and Jeff Paul.

With 207 active programs across Toronto and a 108,000 sq. ft. distribution hub in Etobicoke, Daily Bread is set up to serve the community by meeting emergency needs and advocating for long-term solutions to end poverty.

By purchasing a ticket and bringing non-perishable food items to the Canned Laughs comedy event, fellow Torontonians facing hunger will continue to be able to rely on Daily Bread services to get the food they need this holiday season and year round.

Daily Bread Food Bank is currently seeing record numbers of people seek its services, with more than 260,000 client visits to its member food banks made each month.

“Pre-pandemic, this number was around 60,000. In addition, we are seeing more than 12,500 new individuals walking through our doors each month – these are people who have never before had to make use of emergency food services,” a representative for Daily Bread told Now Toronto in an email statement.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic Daily Bread was spending $1.5M on food purchase each year.

“This number is now an astounding $22M. The support of the community through food and financial donations is essential for us to continue to meet the need. We can only do this work together,” Daily Bread Food Bank also said.
