A family law firm is helping to expand access to the legal system for families in need on Friday.

Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers are offering free initial consultations on Mar. 24 for their second annual “Pro Bono Day.”

The firm urges that all requests for an initial consultation be made by 5 p.m. on Mar. 22.

One-on-one sessions are offered over the phone or on Zoom by Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers to those who are seeking advice on handling family law situations such as divorce and separation.

“Too many families don’t have access to high-quality legal services as they are going through the process of a divorce,” Russell Alexander said, in a press release. “Our goal with these complimentary consultations is to share answers to some of the most important questions they face so that they can make more informed decisions.”

The Canadian Forum on Civil Justice reports that everyday legal problems are straining the personal finances of Canadians.

Canadians spend nearly $7.7 billion annually on legal problems and these issues cost the state $799 million per year, many of which are directly related to physical, emotional and psychological consequences of experiencing legal problems.

Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers’ “Pro Bono Day” aims to promote access to justice and offer the community educational resources. The first event was held in Sept. 2022.

The firm decided to continue the initiative when consultation sessions were so well-received with both associates and individuals getting advice.

“Even a single session with a lawyer can dramatically improve the outcome of a divorce, separation and other family law matters,” Alexander continued. “Our lawyers are able to correct common misconceptions, give people general advice about how to handle a difficult issue or just offer them reassurance that they are on the right path. Our team finds it extremely rewarding to have the opportunity to give back to our community in this way.”

Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers also offer services involving child custody and access, spousal support, child support, and division of family property.

The firm has offices in Toronto, Concord, Markham, Whitby, Oshawa, Lindsay and Peterborough, Ontario.
