
Governor General Mary Simon has appointed 80 new members to the Order of Canada, including Olympic medalist Andre De Grasse and music journalist Nardwuar.
The appointments were announced Wednesday. The Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours, recognizing outstanding achievement and service.
Since its creation in 1967, more than 8,000 people from all sectors of society have been appointed.
This year’s recipients include six Companions, 15 Officers, and 59 Members.

ANDRE DE GRASSE
Hailing from Markham, ON, Andre De Grasse has raced his way to this high honour. De Grasse made history as the first Canadian to win all three sprint events in his Olympic debut at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio. He would then go on to take home gold medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
ELSABETH BLACK
Elsabeth Black, also known as Ellie, has gone on to become one of the leading forces in Canadian gymnastics. Black is also an Olympian who has competed in four Olympic games, most recently at Paris 2024. In 2022, she competed in the World Championships where she led the Canadian women’s gymnastics team to a bronze medal.
NARDWUAR THE HUMAN SERVIETTE
Music journalist and pop culture icon, Nardwuar the Human Serviette, is also on the list of prominent Canadians receiving the honour. Nardwuar has gained a global following throughout his career, and has become most known for his interviews with prominent celebrities and global figures, alongside his in-depth and extensive research that he brings to his interviews.
TERRI CLARK
Terri Clark has become a trailblazer in Canadian country music since debuting onto the scene in 1995. Since then, Clark has made several notable achievements, including becoming the first Canadian female inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. In addition, she has been nominated and won several Juno Awards including Country Album of the Year in 2012.
SIMON BRAULT
Simon Brault has been appointed as a companion to the Order of Canada. Brault is the director of the Canada Council of Arts, and has worked extensively to reshape accessibility and democratization within the arts. This includes strengthening support for artists, as well as those from diverse backgrounds and Indigenous communities.
ELLY GOTZ
Renowned educator and Holocaust survivor, Elly Gotz, is now a member of the Order of Canada. Gotz has spent three decades teaching students within education centers, high schools and universities. His work includes educating students on the conditions that bring about genocide, and advocating for human rights.
