The result was historic for more than one reason. Canada’s six-goal performance marked the largest margin of victory ever recorded by a CONCACAF nation at a FIFA World Cup.

The win also saw Canada become the first World Cup host nation to score six goals in a single match since Argentina accomplished the feat in 1978. In addition, the team also had the most touches in the opponents box by any team since 1966.

Several Canadian players etched their names into the history books as well.

Forward Cyle Larin became the first player to score two goals for Canada in a FIFA World Cup match, further cementing his place among the country’s greatest goal scorers.

Jonathan David also delivered a standout performance, joining an exclusive group of players to record a hat-trick at this year’s tournament.

Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the match was not without concern for the Canadian side.

Midfielder Ismaël Koné suffered a serious injury early in the second half and was forced to leave the match. The severity of the injury has not yet been fully disclosed.

With the victory, Canada strengthened its position in the group standings and took a significant step toward advancing to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.
