Life Labs Inc. has finally agreed to pay people through a $9.8 million settlement, but Canadians are unsatisfied with the small chunk of change they’re receiving.

Any Canadian who was part of the class-action lawsuit against Life Labs Inc. are receiving e-transfers of $7.86 or cheques of $5.86 after a $2 processing fee.

Over 900,000 claims were received, according to claim administrator KPMG on the class-action website.

The website says the lawsuit occurred after the personal information, including health card numbers, of 8.6 million customers was stolen.

Payments are much smaller than what was originally promised on the settlement approval notice, which was compensation of $50 to $150.

Online, some Canadians are disappointed with what they thought they signed up for.

“Don’t spend the 7 dollars all in one place,” one person said on X.

“Imagine getting an e-transfer of only $7.86! Wow! They have the audacity to deduct $2 processing fee if people opt for a cheque. This is adding insult to injury!” another person commented.

Diabetes advocacy group Type 1 Together posted a thread on Facebook letting people know about the e-transfer.

“Personally I was hoping for some accountability. There is nothing positive about having your medical information stolen,” one person commented on the post.

Other Canadians are concerned about American medical lab giant Quest Diagnostics purchasing Life Labs Inc., as it also recently underwent a class-action lawsuit

“What a shame that is, Americans can have control over Canadian health companies… shameful,” one person commented on Reddit.
