What to know
- Canadians who registered for the $500-million packaged bread settlement against Loblaw and George Weston Ltd. have started receiving their funds via e-transfer and cheque earlier this month.
- While a $500-million settlement sounds massive, the sheer volume of claims means individual payouts came out to just $49.11 or $24.11, per personal accounts shared online.
- Social media is flooded with hilarious reactions, as Canadians jokingly declare themselves “rich” and plan to spend the money on “half a loaf of bread.”
Some Canadians just got paid from a $500-million settlement in a lawsuit that accused Loblaw of overcharging customers for bread, but the payouts are leading to humorous comments online.
The million-dollar settlement is linked to a class action, in which major grocers such as Loblaw and George Weston Ltd. were found to have been inflating the price of packaged bread since 2001.
The settlement was finalized in 2024, requiring Loblaw and George Weston Ltd. to pay $404 million, in addition to Loblaw’s earlier $96 million gift card program. Canadians who bought packaged bread between 2001 and 2021 were eligible for compensation.
After millions reportedly registered for the payout, individual payments were reduced to $49.11 — or $24.11 for those who had already received a Loblaw gift card through the earlier program.

Canadians joke about $49 Loblaw bread settlement payouts
Earlier this month, Canadians who registered for compensation have finally started receiving their payments through Interac e-Transfer or by cheque, depending on their preferred payment method.
Although the million-dollar settlement might sound impressive, the actual amount received by those registered is leading to humorous comments online.
“Canadians be like: did you get $49.11 from the bread settlement?” one user wrote in a viral post on X.
“I’m a fake ass Canadian. Did not get that $49.11 bread class action lawsuit settlement,” another person sarcastically said.
“I got my bread-price-fixing settlement money today. What’s everyone going to do with theirs? I’m going to spend it all on half a loaf of bread,” a different user joked.
“I just received a $49.11 payout from the Canadian Packaged Bread Class Actions Settlement…I’m rich? 😂😂😂 Should I buy more flour to make more of my own bread? That outta be about 30kg of flour/,” another user commented.
Although the first approved claims started to be received by Canadians in the week of May 11, others are still waiting for their deposits, which the Canadian Packaged Bread Class Actions Settlement website says might come later due to the amount of claims.
