A globally successful music series that gained momentum for adapting well-known songs into sweeping classical compositions, performed by candlelight, is proving a popular choice among Toronto music lovers.
Candlelight Concerts were launched by Fever in 2019 to democratize access to classical music.
The series is now present in more than 100 cities around the world, including Toronto, and features an impressive, rotating roster of skilled musicians local to the cities they perform in.
The concert series’ distinctive format promises live musical experiences that cater to all tastes, performed in spectacular spaces, by candlelight.
In Toronto, Candlelight Jazz: A Charlie Brown Christmas, is played by the Thompson Egbo-Egbo Quartet, which includes piano, bass, drums, saxophone and trumpet. Tribute to Coldplay is a piano solo, and Candlelight: A Tribute to 2CELLOS, is performed by Listeso Cellists.
Concert venues are thoughtfully selected based on their historical significance and timeless beauty, and attendees are invited to participate in the performances by the musicians, who speak directly to guests and share information about the artists they are paying tribute to. Moreover, everyone is encouraged to hum along and even dance to the tunes they recognize.
The appeal of gifted musicians performing recognizable pieces against a charming backdrop is distinct to Candlelight Concerts, which continue to make classical music accessible to diverse audiences by harnessing the genre’s adaptability and performing compositions for all tastes.
“We acknowledge that consumption patterns have changed over the years – particularly for younger people – and by offering a more multi-sensory, immersive experience, we are really noticing a broader and more diverse audience coming to the shows,” a representative for Candlelight Concerts told Now Toronto.
“The introduction of ‘tribute’ programs more aligned to jazz, rock and pop artists but performed by a string quartet or other classical instruments enables us to connect with a broader audience that might have never considered a classical music concert before,” they continued.
A Taylor Swift Candlelight Concert is set to take place at Paradise Theatre in the Junction this month and again in January 2024.
Fever’s Candlelight Concerts are also hosting a series of Holiday shows in Toronto this year, that include Christmas-time classics like “The Nutcracker,” in different venues around the city.
