Canada losing out on clean tech boom

The clean tech sector may be busting out around the world, but Canada’s status among top global exporters in clean technology is on the skids, according to the 2015 Canadian Clean Technology Industry Report, put out by Ottawa-based Analytica Advisors.

It found Canada dropped to 19th spot in clean tech exports from 14 in 2005, while the global market in clean technology doubled to $1 trillion over the same period. Canada’s drop in market share cost our economy $124 billion in lost export revenues over those eight years, according to Analytica.

Canada’s $12-billion-a-year clean tech sector employed nearly 50,000 people in 2013 – compared to just over 22,000 in the oil sands. Yet the report says no single government ministry is responsible for the industry. And it’s time for the feds and the provinces to step up.
