Goodwill is planning on opening dozens of new stores across Canada.
The global resale giant, which has been in operation since 1902, will open over 40 stores in the next five years, according to Retail Insider.
Goodwill currently has one donation centre in Toronto and a few stores scattered around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) including Mississauga and Oakville.
The store is known for selling everyday wardrobe and house hold items.
“In the last decade I have seen a change and particularly since Covid as there has been more ethical shopping and people wanting to shop with conscience and because thrift enables reuse, recycle, and repurposing – they are obviously more ethical than fast fashion which is one of the world’s biggest polluters,” Kelly Duffin, president and CEO of Goodwill, told the outlet.
Duffin shares that the rise in resale is also thanks to young adults between the ages of 18 to 35 who want to buy fashion at a lower price, and enjoy the feeling of snagging unique and personalized items that are rare to come by.
In addition to the new stores, the organization wants to also set up 75 donation locations.
In 2016, Goodwill closed down 16 locations and 10 donation centres in Toronto citing financial troubles.
