The TTC is responding after a fake ad went viral online telling riders to figure out how to pay their fare.
Last week, a photo of a streetcar was posted on X and attached to the transit vehicle was a poster that read “Can’t afford to pay? Figure it out. Not our problem.”
Since then, the post has garnered a slew of reactions from some Torontonians.
In response, the TTC has confirmed that the image is in fact photoshopped and not from a real ad campaign.
“It’s a photoshop job. It’s also not funny as the original poster is about a very important city program to assist folks who are on fixed/low incomes,” TTC spokesperson Stuart Green told Now Toronto in a statement on Monday.
Last month, the TTC released a new campaign to remind people to pay their fares following an internal audit report that revealed rising rates in fare evasion.
According to the report, the fare evasion rate was nearly 30 per cent on streetcars, 6.3 per cent in stations and 12.9 per cent on buses between Apr. to Oct. 2023.
