
Canadians are stoked about its first women’s basketball league coming to Toronto.
Toronto billionaire Larry Tanenbaum is expanding the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) through his company Kilmer Sports Inc., CBC reports.
The official announcement is set for May 23 and the team is expected to begin playing in May 2026, according to CBC’s anonymous sources.
Tanenbaum is the chairman of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Maple Leafs, Raptors, TFC, Argos and Marlies.
Toronto would be the 14th WNBA team in North America, following the announcement of the 13th team expansion in San Francisco, according to the WNBA.

Online, people are excited about what the expansion means for sports in Toronto.
“Real fans are priced out of Leafs and Raptors games and this city loves its sports teams so I have no doubt the vibes will be amazing,” one person said on Reddit.
“Can finally afford to go to a game of basketball in Toronto. Let’s goo!!” one person commented on X.
Even basketball fans outside of Canada are excited for Toronto.

Some people are making jokes about the potential name of the team and Toronto rapper Drake’s possible involvement.
