Line 3 Scarborough Rapid Transit (SRT) cars are getting shipped to Detroit to be rebranded and used for their transportation system.
Decommissioning of all Line 3 SRT cars to be sent to Detroit began in September this year, according to the Toronto Transit Commision (TTC).
According to the TTC, 18 cars will be shipped to Detroit for the city’s 2.9-mile automated rail system, which has 13 stations throughout downtown Detroit. Two cars will be heading to the Halton streetcar museum and one for show at the Toronto Zoo.
Plans of replacing the SRT with a new busway began back in 2020 and the line was officially decommissioned in 2023, according to a release.
The SRT will be replaced with the Line 3 Busway with a similar route to Line 3, beginning at Kennedy Station and ending at the Scarborough Town Centre.
TTC spokesperson Stuart Green told Now Toronto on Monday that 18 of the Line 3 cars were bought by the Detroit People Mover.
“The technology is only used there and in Vancouver,” Green replied, when asked why the cars were getting shipped to Detroit instead of another nearby Canadian city.
Green also said the new construction of Line 3 busway doesn’t mean there are any plans to fast track the opening of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT.

Advocacy group Redesigning TTC already posted about the delayed announcements causing confusion amongst passengers on the Line 3 Busway.
Online, some Toronto residents are also reacting to the transit changes.
“I really hope someone from here who rides it in Detroit records or takes pics and posts here one day, I’m curious to see what it’ll looks like with the changes they’ll make to it,” one Reddit user said.
Some people still have hopes the final removal of Line 3 meant an update for the Eglinton LRT.
“This is the Eglinton LRT replacement,” one person on Reddit suggested.
“That’s how they’re gonna finally get the Eglinton Line running,” another person said.
