A nutty turn of events. A man in Ontario has been charged after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of walnuts.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRP) has arrested a man after a trailer carrying walnuts was stolen from the yard of a Cambridge business on Nov. 5, 2023, in the Eagle St. N. and Hespeler Rd. area.

On Dec. 13, 2023, both the trailer and nuts were recovered by Halton Regional Police Service in Milton before being given back to the company.

A few weeks later, on Dec. 29, the business was the victim of theft again when around $26,000 worth of walnuts were stolen from its trailer. Police from Hamilton and Waterloo Region then recovered about $11,000 worth of the stolen nuts in February of this year.

As part of an ongoing investigation into the theft, police charged a 68-year-old man from Kitchener with possession of stolen property over $5,000 on Oct. 17, 2024.

The accused, who was not named in the police release, is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 27.

NOT THE ONLY NUTTY INCIDENT ON WRP RADAR

While this may sound like a unique series of events, this is not the only nut-related theft investigation on WRP’s radar.

Police in the area are also investigating after a transport truck and trailer containing pistachios was stolen in Wilmot Township earlier this year.

At around 9:30 p.m., on Jan. 20, suspects stole a transport truck and a trailer filled with the nuts from outside of a business in the Foundry St. and Gingerich Rd. area.

Police say that an investigation is ongoing, and the estimated value of the stolen pistachios is approximately $70,000.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact WRP at 519-570-9777, extension 6399 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
