The Ontario government has officially broken ground on a project to extend the Lakeshore East GO line 18.7 kilometres to Bowmanville.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in Whitby, with the government confirming that the extension will add four new stops further into Durham Region, at Thornton’s Corners East, Ritson Road, Courtice, and Bowmanville.

Once complete, service will run every half hour during peak periods, hourly during off-peak periods, and every two hours on weekends.

Currently ending at Durham College Oshawa GO Station, the line’s first phase of construction will include rebuilding and modifying bridges along the corridor, relocating utilities, and making improvements at the Durham College Oshawa GO Station and the adjacent VIA Rail building, according to the Ontario government.

The extension is expected to accommodate 17,000 daily trips and provide two-way, all-day service once complete.

This project is the latest in a series of expansions across the GO network. The province recently opened Confederation GO Station along the Lakeshore West line in Hamilton and is also expanding service on the Kitchener line in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

Eventually, the line will include a new station on its western portion at the planned East Harbour Transit Hub, a new station that will connect the Lakeshore East and Stouffville lines to the under-construction Ontario Line subway.

The Bowmanville Extension is expected to be completed in the 2030s, though no firm timeline has been announced.
