Starting Friday, drivers on several Ontario highways will be able to travel at speeds of up to 110 km/h as the province expands its higher speed limit program.
Earlier this week, Premier Doug Ford announced that speed limits on sections of Highways 401 and 416 will permanently increase from 100 km/h to 110 km/h.
The changes taking effect Friday include Highway 401 between Highway 15 and Highway 16, as well as Highway 416 from Cedar Grove Road to Highway 401.
However, that’s just the beginning of a broader rollout. According to the provincial government, 89 per cent of provincially owned, 400-series highways will have a maximum speed limit of 110 km/h by the time the expansion is completed in September.
“With this new speed limit in place, drivers travelling from Sarnia to Toronto could save nearly 20 minutes, while those travelling from Toronto to Ottawa could save nearly half an hour,” Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said in a statement.
Additional highway sections are scheduled to see speed limit increases throughout the summer.
