The Ontario NDP have launched a campaign calling on Doug Ford’s government to ban ticket re-sales above face value amidst outrage over high prices for the World Series.

The official opposition launched the campaign outside of The Rogers Centre on Thursday morning, urging Ontarians to join the fight by singing an online petition.

It comes as Blue Jays fans struggle to obtain affordable tickets for the World Series, with many being charged upwards of thousands of dollars for resale tickets in Toronto and Los Angeles.

“Blue Jays fans are being priced out of the World Series with tickets reselling for thousands. The Ontario NDP’s ‘Fans First’ plan is simple: ban resale above face value. Not a cent more,” NDP Leader Marit Stiles said in a post on X.

Prior to 2019, the Liberals proposed to include a 50 per cent cap on ticket resale prices in the Ontario Ticket Sales Act, which was designed to keep sales affordable, but it was scrapped in 2019 by the Ford government.

Now, NDP Shadow Attorney General Kristyn Wong-Tam has introduced a motion to ban the resale of tickets above their face value.

“This motion gives the Ford government a chance to stop with the soundbites and slogans, and finally put fans first by banning resellers from making excess profits off of Ontarians,”  Wong-Tam said in a news release on Thursday.

It comes nearly a day after Ford announced he will review ticket resale price caps, and accused Ticketmaster of price gouging.

“Ontarians shouldn’t have to go into debt to support their team or see their favourite artist. If Ford’s Conservatives don’t allow this motion to pass, then Blue Jays fans can point the finger squarely at him when they’re priced out of the World Series,” Stiles said in a statement.

The Ontario Liberal party have also spoken out, and released a statement calling on Ford’s government to reinstate policy capping ticket resale prices.

Game 1 of the World Series will see the Blue Jays take on the L.A Dodgers at the Rogers Centre on Friday.
