Another Toronto brewery has poured its last pint in Liberty Village.
Something in the Water Brewing Co., which opened in 2022 in Liberty Market Building, has closed permanently after four years of operations.
The brewpub quickly became one of Liberty Village’s best-known independent breweries for its unique craft beers, trivia events, pop-up markets and open mic nights.
In 2021, its beers won a Silver medal at the World Beer Awards for its Pancake Bay Sweet Brunch Stout. The brewery was also named Canada’s New Brewery of the Year at the Brewer’s Choice Awards in 2023.
Steve Waugh, the owner of Something in the Water, posted an announcement to its Instagram page announcing the closure.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share with you that we are closing our Liberty Village location permanently,” the post reads.
“The challenges have been numerous, and ultimately too great to overcome. Liberty is where it all began for SITW and we will forever cherish the beer release parties, TFC days, Argos game days, private events, and each and every guest that chose to walk through our front door.”
Ghost Taco, which Waugh bought as a franchise and shared retail space with Something in the Water, seems to have also shut down. Ghost Tacos served affordable and out-of-the-box flavour combinations.
Although the Liberty Village location has shut down, Something in the Water will continue to operate and brew beers in its Kingston location on Princess Street.
However, this may not be Waugh’s final hurrah in Toronto. The farewell post on Instagram ended with, “We have big plans in the works and we’ll be back in Toronto with something else.”
