activist and mayoral candi-
date Tooker Gomberg was finally released from a Quebec jail Tuesday evening on $300 bail.
Gomberg, in Quebec on assignment for NOW to shoot video for the paper's Web site (look for his coverage this week at www.nowtoronto.com.), was arrested Saturday night and charged with participating in a riot and obstructing a police officer. His trial is set for May 24.
Speaking to NOW from inside the Orsainville jail Tuesday morning, Gomberg said he looked up and saw a wave of protestors running toward him. "By the time we realized what was happening and got on our bikes to try to run away, there were two or three green-outfitted riot cops that were on top of me. They put their riot sticks in my bicycle wheel and were on top of me and twisting my wrists back and wrestling me to the ground."
One independent eyewitness, Monica Harhay, has corroborated Gomberg's contention that he was quietly hanging around outside the security fence on boulevard René Lévesque when the police charged without warning and nabbed him.
