What to know

  • Toronto and the GTA are warming up after a week of snow and frigid temperatures, with highs reaching 4–8 C midweek.
  • The week starts cold, with Monday and Tuesday highs below freezing, and wind chills near -16°C.
  • Environment Canada forecasts some precipitation midweek, including rain on Wednesday and Thursday and flurries on Friday, but the weekend should be drier.
  • Overnight lows will be milder than last week, hovering near or slightly above seasonal averages.

After a week of frigid temperatures and snowstorms, Toronto is finally getting a break, with daytime highs expected to rise above the freezing mark for much of the week.

The city and much of the GTA will start the week on a cold note, with highs of -5 C on Monday, feeling more like -16 C with the wind chill according to Environment Canada. Then on Tuesday, temperatures will reach just -2 C.

Temperatures in the city are expected to warm quickly, becoming mild by midweek. Environment Canada forecasts daytime highs of 4 C on Wednesday and up to 8 C on Thursday.

Cold conditions will return on Friday, with highs around -4 C, but the weekend will see temperatures climb above seasonal levels again, with highs of 4 C on Saturday and 1°C on Sunday.

Despite the warmer temperatures, Environment Canada is still forecasting some precipitation this week, with a chance of rain on Wednesday and Thursday and a chance of flurries on Friday. The weekend, however, is expected to be drier.

The warmer temperatures come after the region was hit by back-to-back snowstorms last week, caused by two Alberta clippers that dropped nearly 10 centimetres of snow.

Overnight lows will also be milder than last week, hovering near or slightly above seasonal averages. Wednesday night, for instance, is expected to see a low of around -1 C.
