The Blue Jays have lost Game 2 of the World Series 5-1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
After a sweeping Game 1 victory, the Jays gave way to the Dodgers Saturday night.
Unlike Friday, the first six innings were more or less uneventful, with the score remaining unchanged at 1-1.
That all changed in the top of the seventh.
Two back-to-back solo home runs by catcher Will Smith and infielder Max Muncy of the Dodgers quickly tipped the scale to 3-1 in favour of Los Angeles.
That’s when the Jays’ starting pitcher Kevin Gausman was tapped out for Louis Varland. At that point, Gausman had thrown 82 pitches in the game which was also his World Series debut.
A challenge by the Jays on a call at second base threw some dramatic flare in the bottom of the seventh. The challenge was unsuccessful. Also unsuccessful were a series of curve pitches by Varland in the top of the eighth.
All in all, not quite the same sweeping victory the stadium saw the night before, but definitely enough to dampen the Jays’ fans’ cheers.
The World Series now heads to Los Angeles, where the Jays and the Dodgers will play the next three games.
