What to know

  • The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has issued a flood warning as heavy rainfall continues across the Toronto region.
  • Flooding is already occurring in some areas, including along the Lower Don River near Todmorden Mills and the Bayview Avenue Extension near the Brick Works.
  • Water levels in several watersheds, particularly Etobicoke Creek and Carruthers Creek, are still rising and have not yet reached their peak.
  •  Residents are being urged to avoid flooded areas and waterways, as additional rainfall and strong wind gusts could worsen conditions throughout the day.

As the region wakes up to heavy overnight rainfall, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has issued a flood warning.

The warning comes as Toronto is expected to receive an additional 10 mm of rain throughout the day.

According to the TRCA, flooding is already occurring within several of its watersheds, particularly along the Lower Don River near Todmorden Mills and the Bayview Avenue Extension south of Pottery Road, adjacent to the Brick Works in Toronto.

The authority says all rivers, streams, shorelines, floodplains and low-lying areas should be considered dangerous due to elevated water levels and ongoing flooding.

Residents are being warned that fast-moving water, unstable banks and flooded areas pose significant safety risks.

The TRCA also notes that water levels in other watersheds continue to rise and have not yet reached their peak, particularly within the Etobicoke Creek and Carruthers Creek watersheds.

With additional rainfall still expected, river levels are likely to continue rising as runoff moves through watershed systems toward downstream areas.

Rainfall totals have ranged from 20 mm to 67 mm across TRCA watersheds. As a result, the ground has become saturated, reducing its ability to absorb additional rainfall and increasing the risk of further flooding and runoff.

The TRCA is advising residents to avoid flooded areas, exercise caution around all bodies of water, keep children and pets away from fast-moving water, and avoid recreational water activities. Motorists are also encouraged to check traffic conditions before travelling and to avoid flooded roadways whenever possible.

According to Environment Canada, a special weather statement remains in effect for Toronto and is expected to continue through the morning.

The weather agency is warning of southwesterly wind gusts of up to 70 km/h, with higher gusts possible in thunderstorms, along with additional rainfall amounts of 5 to 20 mm.
