TTC and Metrolinx are giving free rides on New Year’s Eve – here’s what you need to know

The TTC and Metrolinx will offer free transit on New Year’s Eve from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. New Year’s Day, along with extended hours and extra holiday service across TTC, GO Transit and UP Express.

What to know

  • All TTC vehicles, GO Transit trains and UP Express will be free from 7 p.m. on Dec. 31 until 8 a.m. on Jan. 1.
  • TTC subways, GO Transit lines and UP Express will run later than usual on New Year’s Eve, with additional trains, buses and increased frequency on key routes.
  • Metrolinx is adding extra trips on select GO lines on Christmas Eve and adjusting GO bus schedules starting Jan. 3, 2026, including new routes and route removals.
  • Extra subway service, express bus routes to Line 2, and limited late-night access points at Union Station will be in place for New Year’s Eve travel.

The TTC and Metrolinx are giving transit customers a free ride on New Year’s Eve, along with more service to help riders travel during the holidays. 

On Dec. 31, starting at 7 p.m., the transit agencies will be offering free rides on all TTC transit vehicles, GO Transit trains and UP Express trains until 8 a.m. on Jan. 1. 

In addition, both Metrolinx and the TTC will be offering extra services throughout the holidays and running extra late on Dec. 31 into 2026. 

Metrolinx

On Christmas Eve, Metrolinx is adding more service on the Milton and Richmond Hill lines from Union Station:

  • Milton Line: Two additional trips have been added and will depart Union Station at 1:40 p.m. and 2:40 p.m.
  • Richmond Hill: An additional trip has been added and will depart Union Station at 2:45 p.m.

For New Year’s Eve, both GO Transit and UP Express will be running extra late: 

  • Lakeshore West: last train leaving Union Station at 7:47 a.m.
  • Lakeshore East: last train leaving Union Station at 7:20 a.m.
  • Kitchener Line: last train leaving Union Station at 6:34 a.m. 
  • Stouffville Line: last train leaving Union Station at 4:00 a.m.
  • Barrie Line: last train leaving Union Station at 3:54 a.m.
  • Richmond Hill Line: last train leaving Union Station at 1:15 a.m.
  • Milton Line:  last train leaving Union Station at 2:55 a.m. 
  • UP Express: Special trains will be departing every 30 minutes, starting at 1:15 a.m., with the last train leaving Union Station at 3:45 a.m.

Metrolinx encourages customers to tap on and off with their PRESTO cards, but they will not be charged. Customers can check schedules on the GO Transit website and Service Updates on its website as well. 

Beginning Jan. 3, 2026, Metrolinx will be adjusting the GO bus schedules on routes 16, 17, 21, 29, 30, 31, 33, 40, 47, 56, and 71 to better reflect travel times and there will be more weekday trips on routes 29 and 31. More details can be found on GO Transit’s website

As of Jan. 3, Metrolinx will also be unveiling new GO bus route options 40M and 40H that extend to serve Humber Polytechnic North Campus and connect to the new Finch West LRT, while routes 54 and 66 will be removed.

TTC

On New Year’s Eve, the transit agency says subway service will run later than usual, but the last trains on most lines will depart before 3 a.m.

  • Line 1 Yonge-University: Last northbound train from Union Station leaves at 2:31 a.m. toward Finch, and at 2:27 a.m. toward Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.
  • Line 2 Bloor-Danforth: Last eastbound train from Kipling departs at 2:15 a.m.; last westbound train from Kennedy leaves at 2:18 a.m.
  • Line 4 Sheppard: Last train departs just after 3 a.m.

The TTC also says it will have extra service on Lines 1 and 2, starting at 10 p.m., and special express buses will operate on two routes to help riders connect to Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth). 

  • Jarvis Street & Queens Quay East to Sherbourne Station: Express buses will run northbound from Jarvis Street and Queens Quay East to Sherbourne Station.
  • Spadina Avenue & Queens Quay West to Bathurst Station: Express buses will run northbound from Spadina Avenue and Queens Quay West to Bathurst Station.

The TTC notes that those travelling from Union Station after midnight will only be able to enter the station through the doors on Bay St., just south of Front St, through the Brookfield Place entrance.
