The TTC is switching up how riders will access Union Station on New Year’s Eve to avoid major crowding seen in previous years.
This year, after celebrations wrap up along the Waterfront, commuters wanting to access Union Station will have to enter through the Brookfield Place doors on Bay St., south of Front St., the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) said in a news release on Friday.
“The change supports a City of Toronto initiative to improve safety at Union Station by restricting access to the interior – a move the City hopes will reduce the crowding and congestion seen in the two previous years,” the TTC wrote.

City staff along with Toronto police will be on hand to monitor customer flow through Brookfield Place to prevent crowding.
The TTC adds that customers might have to line up on Bay St. before entering if the station becomes too crowded.
To avoid crowds at Union, the TTC recommends customers use alternative Line 1 subway stations, such as St. Andrew, Osgoode, King and Queen.
The TTC is free all night on New Year’s Eve, along with GO Transit and UP Express from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 1. The TTC says there will be extra bus, subway and streetcar service throughout the night.
If you want to avoid the hustle and bustle along the Waterfront, the city is setting up satellite locations to offer secondary events with views of the fireworks show. Alternative city events happening on New Year’s Eve include dance lessons and circus performances at Sherbourne Common (61 Dockside Dr.) and at Toronto Music Garden (476 Queens Quay W.), where there will also be short films from the National Film Board of Canada projected onto the side of the Canada Malting Silos.
