Video shows cyclist weaving through traffic on Hwy.401 in Toronto

Footage of a cyclist spotted riding along Highway 401 during heavy Toronto traffic has surfaced online.

A dashcam video shared by @401_da_sarpach via Twitter shows the cyclist weaving between cars and across the multi-lane highway at Kennedy Road, coming within inches of a truck.

It is not clear how or why the cyclist ended up on the highway.

Provincial laws prohibit the use of bicycles on controlled access highways.

The Highway Traffic Act states that “no person shall operate a bicycle; a 50cc-or-under motorcycle; a limited-speed motorcycle, a power-assisted or motor-assisted bicycle, or a wheelchair on a controlled-access highway.”

“From the OPP’s perspective that’s why there are signs on the highway prohibiting pedestrians and cyclists, that kind of behaviour is certainly dangerous…motorists would never see them and they’re so vulnerable. That’s a crash and a disaster, it’s pretty much a death wish,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said to Now Toronto.

Some Twitter users were quick to react to the video;

Schmidt said nobody called the OPP to report the incident and that“they were too busy filming it on their phones.”

This is not the first time a prohibited vehicle has been spotted on the highway. The same Twitter user shared a video in February of a person riding a scooter along  Highway 427 North.
