Sportsnet+ customers are blasting the streaming service after it announced a nearly 30-per cent price hike taking effect in September.
The streaming service, which is owned by Rogers Sports & Media, recently sent an email to customers notifying them of the upcoming changes.
According to Sportsnet+, those changes include a nearly 30-per cent increase for its premium annual package, from $249.99 to $324.99.
The monthly premium package will also increase for customers, from $34.99 to $42.99.
A Sportsnet spokesperson provided details about the changes in a statement to Now Toronto.
“This update reflects that great value for sports fans looking for the best sports content in the country, while remaining competitively priced with other options in the market,” the spokesperson said in a statement on Monday.
The spokesperson also said changes will be coming to the streaming services’s standard monthly and standard annual subscriptions.
Standard monthly subscriptions will increase from $24.99 to $29.99, while standard annual subscription will increase from $199.99 to $249.99.
Standard subscriptions give fans the opportunity to watch all Blue Jays content plus all national and in-market hockey.
While premium subscriptions allow fans to stream everything in standard subscriptions plus all out-of-market hockey, which is about 1,000 extra NHL games.
The changes will be reflected on bills for customers beginning Sept. 9 unless they cancel or modify their subscriptions.
The increase has left customers taking to social media to voice their concerns, with some saying they’re even considering cancelling their subscriptions.
“30 per cent? Jesus. That’s crazy, I feel like you can slip a 5-10 per cent increase without people complaining too much but 30% is an outright middle finger to the existing subscriber base,” a Reddit user said.
“Welp, guess I’m cancelling. $75 Extra per year, for what exactly?,” another user said,
“Totally not worth the price increase,” another user said.
One social user even voiced concerns over having already paid for an annual subscription in October 2024, now, the subscription will be cancelled early.
“Hey [Sportsnet], with your price increase, I was going to cancel. I paid in October 2024 for an annual subscription so it’s pretty messed up that you’d cancel me as of tomorrow when I’ve paid up until October 2025. Insane greed,” an X user said.
