Are you a cash-strapped student looking for inexpensive ways to partake in Toronto’s vibrant arts scene? Then hipTIX has the answers.
Students within the 14-29 age bracket are eligible for $10 + tax theatre tickets thanks to hipTIX, a program that aims to make all forms of theatre available by offering heavily discounted prices on select shows.
Since its establishment in 2006 by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA), which helps to enrich and build new generations of audiences by ensuring they have affordable access to the performing arts, hipTIX has proven successful in its aim to make theatre a viable entertainment option for students on a tight budget.
The theatre scene in Toronto is constantly pushing boundaries and shifting with the demands of its audiences. Similarly, hipTIX is helping to propel the theatre industry forward by fostering new interest through affordability, in turn, challenging the notion that it is an unattainable medium reserved for people with extra money to spend.
In addition, students can earn perks with hiptix’s new frequent buyers rewards program available on the Goosechase app. After signing up, users who watch five shows and show off their experience will be rewarded with one free show!
It’s super easy to get these rewards. First, download the Goosechase app, set up your profile and enter code HIPTIXTO. Then, you’ll be able to see all the shows available for purchase. When you attend a show, upload a photo (eg. the program, your ticket or a selfie in the theatre lobby) into the app and then you’ll automatically receive 500 points per show! You can also earn extra points by posting about your experience on Instagram or TikTok, tagging @hipTIX_TO and using the hashtag #hipTIXTO.
Over 115 companies have participated in hipTIX’s discount program, including but not limited to, Tarragon Theatre, Crows Theatre, The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre, Le Théâtre français de Toronto and Second City, as well as dance companies, including Fall for Dance North.
Playing through the fall 2023 season, and currently available through hipTIX, is Tarragon Theatre’s A Poem for Rabia. The live production tells the tale of three queer women from the same bloodline in an epic journey across time, oceans, and shifts in political history.
Or, if original musicals tickle your fancy, hipTIX is currently offering tickets to a brand new production called The Wild Rovers, based on music by the band The Irish Rovers, playing until Nov. 5 at The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre.
Tickets available for purchase via hipTIX are limited and sold on a first come, first serve, performance by performance basis. Students must present a valid form of identification at the venue on the day of the show.
