Graphic novelist Michael DeForge‘s unique sensibility blends an experimental visual style with deep sensitivity to troubled characters.
His new release, Big Kids ($19.95, Drawn & Quarterly), follows a messed-up high school student whose life changes when a college student moves into the basement of his house. The narrative is more linear than DeForge’s previous work, but he’s given Big Kids the same emotional charge that surges through all his books, deftly dealing with how we handle surprising influences and cope with change. DeForge launches the book Thursday (February 18) at Smiling Buddha.
