A popular downtown museum is officially changing its name to make the institution more accessible and recognizable.

On Tuesday, Myseum of Toronto announced it’s changing its name to Museum of Toronto. The name change comes with an updated logo, website, and social channels.

The museum says “it’s time for a name with clarity” and that the name change is part of its “ongoing commitment to accurately reflect the city and its growing residents.”

“After careful consideration and discussions with Toronto residents, the City of Toronto, and our supporters, we have decided to simplify our name to ‘Museum of Toronto,” Executive Director Heidi Reitmaier said in a statement. “We believe this change will make us more accessible and recognizable to our diverse audience, from dedicated cultural enthusiasts to casual visitors.”

The museum, located near Richmond St. and Spadina Ave., opened nearly 10 years ago and is dedicated to preserving the cultural significance of Toronto’s history. Last year, more than 85,000 people attended the museum.

The museum says it will continue to honour the various voices and stories that have contributed to Toronto’s growth, and that the name change represents its core mission of inspiring and connecting people through the city’s histories.

“Museum of Toronto is a city museum that brings people together to connect, share and learn from each other. This name change represents another step forward in building Toronto’s first city museum, and we invite you to join us,” Diane Blake, co-founder of Museum of Toronto, said in a statement.

Museum of Toronto plans to expand its exhibits, events and educational programs as it moves forward under a new name. The museum is currently gearing up to open its “Toronto Gone Wild” exhibit, which explores the city as a multi-layered habitat, on Apr. 10.

Museum of Toronto is open Wednesday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
