National Matcha Day is coming up, here are 9 unconventional creations in Toronto celebrating matcha madness

From matcha beer to sakura sundaes and carrot cake lattes, Toronto’s spots are going all out for National Matcha Day with creative, must-try treats.

Forget your typical matcha order, Toronto’s cafés are matcha-ing it up with unconventional creations.

The premium Japanese green tea powder makes the well-known matcha that many Torontonians love. After the drink went viral in 2024, Toronto cafés started shaking it up with matcha-infused desserts and alcohol — basically, everything matcha.

With National Matcha Day coming up on Saturday, Now Toronto compiled a list of out-of-the-box matcha-based drinks and desserts available in the city.

Matcha Beer

Location: 915 Dupont St

Rooms 915 Dupont introduced matcha beer on Thursday. The alcoholized drink makes a matcha-made-in-heaven, combining ceremonial-grade matcha with classic Japanese beer.

“The sweetness and umami of matcha soften the bitterness of the beer, while the hops blend with the floral notes of green tea. The carbonation lifts everything, making each sip feel bright, refreshing and incredibly smooth,” the business described the flavours in an Instagram post.

White Matcha

Location: 407 Church St

M2 Cocktail Bar by MATCHA MATCHA is the weekend bar made by the beloved daytime matcha shop. Located inside Matcha Matcha’s downtown location, converted into a bar at night, M2 offers a $19 alcoholized matcha drink. It features cacao butter-washed tequila, pineapple, vanilla yogurt, matcha, and whey. The drink contains 17 per cent alcohol.

Matcha Sakura Sundae

Locations: 596 Yonge St | 255 Beverley St

Matcha doesn’t need to be limited to drinks. Bloom Cafe released a matcha sakura sundae last month. The limited-edition item, planned to stay for two to three months, combines sakura’s slight saltiness with matcha’s rich bitterness, according to their Instagram post.

The soft-serve sundae is layered with house-made strawberry jam and matcha cookies.

Matcha Haus knows matcha — it’s in their name. The shop offers a popular seasonal spring beverage: carrot cake matcha, priced at $9.50. It features a house-made carrot syrup, ceremonial matcha and non-dairy cream cheese foam — on trend with the HAUS-made syrups and vegan cold foam of the brand. This drink is known for its balanced, sweet, and spiced flavour profile, similar to carrot cake.

Matcha Shot

Location: 100 Western Battery Rd, Unit 1

Instead of a juice shot, try a matcha shot — the perfect slightly caffeinated drink. The Liberty Village shop, TonTon Matcha + Coffee, is selling this shot for $5 to give your day an energy boost.

Strawberry Matcha Tiramisu

Tiramisu’s a well-loved dessert. Matcha too. Late April, 18feet released a new menu item: the strawberry matcha tiramisu. It combines matcha’s earthy flavour with the Korean café’s housemade strawberry cheong, making the tiramisu a bit sweet, slightly bitter and very creamy.

Dubai Chocolate has made headlines in 2023 and hasn’t left the spotlight since.
