The Met Gala is known as fashion’s biggest night — and Canadian celebrities understood the assignment.
On Monday, hundreds of stars, creatives and top designers gathered in New York for the annual fundraiser for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, AKA The Met. This year’s theme, Costume Art, celebrates the Costume Institute’s new spring exhibition. The dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” encouraged stars to wear avant-garde, sculptural pieces that draw on artistic expression.
Online, many fans are reacting to Canadian celebrities’ outfits. Here’s what they had to say.
Tate McRae
“Sports Car” singer Tate McRae slayed a “Golden Goddess” look on the red carpet. She wore a custom-made, gold Ludovic de Saint Sernin gown with delicate French Leavers lace, a boned corset, feathered detailing and a cascading train.
“GORGEOUS,” one Instagram user reacted.
“Unparalleled beauty,” another added.
“Kinda giving Hunger Games vibes. I love it.”
But not all vibes were positive.
“Lovely dress, wrong event,” one user wrote.
“Pretty, but not quite as over-the-top as I’d have expected for the Met Gala. The bust piece is gorgeous, though,” another added.
But the 22-year-old singer, songwriter, and dancer switched outfits for the after-party, wearing a strappy gold dress, sunglasses, and a high ponytail.
The dress had a sweetheart neckline with thin spaghetti straps, sewn into a looser, corset-style bodice. The Calgary-born singer styled the look with see-through heels and a perfume-bottle-shaped necklace.

Hudson Williams
Heated Rivalry star Hudson Williams attended the Met Gala in a Balenciaga suit designed by Pierpaolo Piccioli.
The two-piece suit was inspired by a 1947 bolero jacket by Cristóbal Balenciaga, founder of the Spanish house. But Williams took a twist on the traditional Spanish matador-inspired suit by wearing it shirtless.
From his red-and-blue makeup to the details of red and blue makeup to the details on his outfit, here is what The Met Gala fans think.
“FINALLY SOM DIFFERENT FOR MAN’S FASHION,” one user commented on Instagram.
“THIS NEEDS TO BE FRAMED IN A MUSEUM,” another added.
Crave Canada wrote, “The moment we’ve all been waiting for.”
But some commenters disagreed, saying he was “Just happy to look a mess.”
“This is not a slay, I’m sorry, Hudson Williams,” another user added.

Finn Wolfhard
The Stranger Things actor and singer Finn Wolfhard wore Thom Browne for his Met Gala debut. The outfit reflects deconstructing tailoring through a black wool suit, trousers and a utility skirt.
“Loving this outfit inspired by his new album,” one user commented on Instagram.
“Wow, elegant Finn. Very nice,” another wrote.
“He looks like a prince,” another user added.
But some commenters weren’t in love with the look.
“Founding fathers vibe,” one user posted.
“Go give us nothing,” another added.
Paul Anthony Kelly
Love Story actor Paul Anthony Kelly wore a custom Dior burgundy velvet tailcoat, styled with long trousers and loafers. Accessories include Cartier jewelry.
“The best dressed Male at the met gala,” one user commented on Instagram.
“The looks on men we want to see,” another agreed.
“The house of Door truly excelled,” another user wrote.
But some users negatively critiqued the outfit.
“But what’s the vision here?” one user questioned.
“I kind of wish a tie was involved or a black shirt with no tie. Can’t help but think it’s missing something as-is,” another user commented.
Connor Storrie
Meanwhile, Heated Rivalry star Connor Storrie might be American, but he can be an honorary Canadian for his performance in the hit Crave show.
The 26-year-old actor wore a custom black suit by Yves Saint Laurent, designed by creative director Anthony Vaccarello. The outfit features a polka-dot bow-neck blouse, a long scarf, and Tiffany & Co diamond drop earrings with two matching ruby brooches — since brooches are back in trend.
One Instagram user wrote, “HE SLAYED.”
“YUP YUP YUP THIS ONE RIGHT HERE,” one Instagram user enthusiastically posted.
“He’s such a pretty princess baby,” another wrote.
But some were disappointed.
“Imagine being invited to your first Met Gala and pulling up like that,” one user wrote.
“I still don’t see costume art,” another reflected on the theme.
