Halloween is slowly creeping up, and the Distillery District is about to get ghastly. Soulpepper Theatre is rolling out Spooky Season Movie Month, and beginning Oct. 4, horror film fanatics can see some of the best spine-chilling movies each week, completely free of charge.

Held in the theatre’s Cabaret Space, the intimate screening room has a combination of wooden or cushioned chairs, sofa chairs and a couch, perfect to cozy up with some friends for an eerie evening. The event also takes place on the ground floor and is accessible for mobility devices. Pillows and blankets will be provided, but viewers are welcome to bring their own.

Although all the movies are free, registration is required. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Starting at 7 p.m. each Friday evening, here is the line-up of fearful films that attendees can look forward to seeing.

Deemed one of the scariest movies of all-time by several film critics, this Stanley Kubrick classic follows a writer suffering from a creative block, who takes a job as the winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado, bringing along  his wife and son as well. As his writing goes nowhere and his son’s psychic premonitions become more disturbing, he discovers the hotel’s dark secrets and begins to unravel.

Oct. 11 – Funny Games

This intense and unnerving masterpiece follows the tale of a wealthy family, who after having just arrived at their peaceful lakeside vacation home, is visited by a pair of seemingly polite young men. Armed with deceptively sweet smiles and some golf clubs, they proceed to terrorize the tight-knit clan, giving them until the next day to survive. From acclaimed director Michael Haneke, the English language version is a shot-for-shot remake of the original Austrian film.

Oct. 18 – Ready or Not

This fast-paced and darkly comedic film gives a new meaning to loving your family to death. A bride’s wedding night at her new in-laws’ luxurious estate takes a sinister turn once they force her to take part in a terrifying game in accordance with a cursed, generational ritual. Hiding from midnight until dawn while her in-laws hunt her down with guns, crossbows and other weapons, she must fight her way to survive the night.
