Bar Volo to close down after 28 years

For a long time in Toronto, some things were always certain: Even if the LCBO or the local beer bars never carried your favourite Dieu Du Ciel or Trou Du Diable, you always knew you could head over to Bar Volo (587 Yonge, at Dundonald, 416-928-0008, barvolo.com). If they didn’t, they’d have some other magical one-off collab brew you’d never heard of. All of this, of course, pre-supposes you could find a chair anywhere in the place – as a date night spot or an after-work joint, it was unrivalled in the area.

Now, it appears those days are coming to a close. In a piece of news set to break the heart of every beer lover in Toronto, Bar Volo is set to close after 28 years.

Blogger Ben Johnson has confirmed that the long-running business is set to be pushed out by the end of September due to — what else? — a condo being built where the bar stands.

The Morana family, who opened the bar as an Italian restaurant but slowly turned it into the warrenlike craft beer spot we now know and love, say they are currently on the hunt for a new location. In the meantime, however, they’ll be focusing on opening a new, unrelated project, set to go in at 612 College.
