Curtains at House-Maison

After a year on Church St., House-Maison has left the building. The sister eatery to 7 West, Wish and Smith has moved out of the sprawling Victorian mansion (580 Church, at Dundonald) that it occupied for the past year, with a chalkboard left out front reading “Pop up Popped out – Merci.”

As owner Renda Abdo tells it, the space was always meant to be temporary, though it never seemed to be publicly billed as a pop-up upon opening just before Pride in 2014. “The owner of this property will be tearing it down and eventually building a condo – we did not want a renewal,” Abdo says via email.

The massive quantity of real estate (including a gorgeous wooden wraparound patio) allowed the restaurant to play with an ambitious two-in-one concept that initially saw two separate menu concepts – French and American – served on opposite sides of the eatery as time went on, the kitchen turned its focus toward elevated takes on classic seafood dishes.

If you developed an affinity for their done-up takes on lobster rolls and niçoise salads, don’t fret just yet – Abdo hints that House may return in a new west-end home.
