A Canadian TikToker aired her frustrations and shared that Canadians get the short-end of the stick and don’t get paid for the content they post to the platform.
TikTok user @vwq20, who has over 20,000 followers, said that navigating the world’s most popular app and trying to make revenue off of it has never been harder.
“It is quite annoying cause I know the UK, Americans and other countries do get paid to basically make content,” she said.
“And they keep saying they’re going to try to work on it to get funds for the Canadian TikTokers, but it’s been years now and there’s been no progress.”
She also expressed how difficult it’s been to get brands to collaborate, especially once they find out she lives in Canada.
“I have companies who reach out to me and want to work with me. And by the time it’s time to send the item to me and I need to provide an address…as soon as I list the country as Canada, I get, ‘Oh I’m sorry, I can’t work with you.’”
“And that already limits the revenue I could be making off of TikTok,” she continued.
The creator admits that she started making videos for fun to genuinely share her experiences with people and that it’s not about the money, but more about how Canadians are being left out.
However, there are other ways Canadian TikTokers can get paid, if not for views.
In fact, the platform has a wide variety of monetization opportunities that many people don’t know about.
This includes creator marketplace, live subscriptions, live gifting and series.
Creator Marketplace is a great tool where influencers can collaborate and connect with brands in order to get paid for campaigns.
And if you want to get into your educational bag you can check out Series, which allows you to charge what you want for access to your premium, informative content.
Many influencers understand that TikTok should be seen as a launchpad to kick start creative ideas and get, in many cases, millions of eyes on their content.
One of the best examples right now of using TikTok as a launchpad is none other than Calgary-native singer Tate McRae.
McRae has effortlessly used TikTok to share her music with the masses and has gone viral several times, which has led to her dropping multiple studio albums.
Tate McRae’s ‘greedy‘ has seen staggering success in the back half of 2023, both on TikTok and off platform.
With over three million videos created using the song (two million across the two main sounds and 1.2M across the two sped-up clips) [the song] was used in various influencer and celebrity videos, drawing from the “Tube Girl” trend created by UK creator Sabrina Bahsoon. Videos using the track have also amassed over 20 billion video views on TikTok globally.
