What to know

  • Sakura Hours in Richmond Hill is offering an AI-powered shampoo and head massage that lets you lie back while a machine takes over the entire process.
  • The experience blends Japanese head therapy techniques with a viral Chinese AI head spa trend that’s already popular overseas.
  • Before the treatment starts, a staff member analyzes your scalp and hair so the machine can adjust pressure, rhythm and settings to your needs.
  • The 20-minute AI shampoo and massage costs $29 and can be booked on its own or added to other spa treatments.

Is AI the future of self-care? Richmond Hill spa Sakura Hours is offering a new and unique AI Shampooing & Massage treatment.

Sakura Hours prides itself on combining ancient wisdom with modern innovation.

Store manager Marrick Huang tells Now Toronto that she grew up in China but that her grandpa is from Okinawa, Japan, which inspired the spa’s design.

“We try to bring the authentic way Japanese people do a spa, and try to combine the Japanese style with some parts of Chinese,” Huang said.

To keep up with modern technology, the spa is offering a new service to its clientele, a Chinese head therapy experience, which might possibly be the first spa in the GTA to offer this service.

The machine aims to reduce tension and stress by stimulating vital energy flow.

Behind the idea

This practice came to life after a trip to Shanghai, China. The manager of the therapist team, Kiki Zhu, discovered the common Chinese practice of an AI head spa, enjoyed it, and imported a machine over to the city.

How it works

Before being in AI’s hands for the AI Shampooing & Massage service, a staff member will check the scalp first with an instrument to know its condition, analyze the hair’s length and thickness, and match the modes of the device to the customer’s needs.

Then, a staff member will set the client on a special bed and set up the device. Once all is set up, customers can detox in the room alone.

“You don’t need to do anything. Just lie down, and it will automatically do everything for you,” Huang explained.

The device’s 128 micro-jets adjust pressure and rhythm by area, combining advanced AI technology with traditional head spa pressure points. There are even some special light features.

During the treatment, clients can enjoy the special bed’s automatic synchronized massage feature for a full-body experience. After the treatment, Huang says the machine is cleaned after every use.

To finish the service, the staff will do precision drying and hair rejuvenation on the client. This service can also be combined with other treatments.
