Green find of the week: Free Geek Toronto

Ready to ditch your old computer but want to make sure it’s recycled safely and ethically? Need a laptop but can’t afford a new one? Free Geek is a non-profit that was set up to keep e-waste from landfill and make computers accessible to all. Refurbished laptops range from $80 to $200.

The other cool thing: they offer a six-month work placement program for people struggling with unemployment who are on income support like Ontario Works or Ontario Disability. They also give computer and internet training for beginners on the cheap. Whatever can’t be refurbished gets recycled in Ontario. (No dodgy overseas e-waste dumping here.) Check out the programs and online store at freegeektoronto.org.
