London, Bangkok, Paris and Miami are among the most overrated cities to visit, a new study says.

The study, conducted by King Casino Bonus UK,  investigated the top 85 rated tourist destinations in the world by collating reviews on popular online review websites in order to determine the “odds of being disappointed” during a visit.

The study intends to challenge preconceived notions about the most visited places across the globe in an effort to help travellers pick the perfect vacation destination.

Bangkok, Thailand was found to be the most overrated city with 16.6 per cent of reviewers saying they were disappointed by their experience.

Visitors were especially displeased by Bangkok’s hyped-up street food scene. Though they did comment that the food was cheap, they were underwhelmed by its quality.

Khao San Road, Bangkok’s backpacking district, was particularly badly reviewed. It was described as “extremely touristy” and only worthwhile if you’re “young and looking to party,” by its critics.

Singapore was also poorly reviewed as a tourist destination, with 15.8 per cent of visitors characterizing their time in the city-state as sub-par, saying it was “a place to work but not a great city for anything fun or exciting.” But, what Singapore lacks in “soul and culture” it makes up for in photo ops at its legendary infinity pool atop the Marina Sand Bay building and the Gardens by the Bay, visitors said.

Antalya, Turkey was described as “average” by numerous reviewers according to the study, who said tourists are better off staying in a resort than exploring the city proper.

Miami, Florida took the top spot as the United States’ most overrated city. According to reviews posted on travel review portals, “13.9 percent of tourists leave the city disappointed,” expressing that Little Havana has “lost its charm and feels like a big tourist trap.”

Similarly, London, England left 13.8 per cent of tourists dissatisfied, specifically with their experiences at the London Eye, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben.

Paris saw 13.8 of its visitors leave less than impressed, many of whom felt unsafe and harassed, according to the study, though people still love the Eiffel Tower for a photo.

The study found that Munich’s best attraction is Oktoberfest, but people should give the rest of the city a miss, reviewers concluded.

Overall, the most overrated city is Bangkok, followed by Antalya,Singapore, Munich and Rimini rounding out the top five.

The ratings and reviews that were analyzed in this study were taken from Tripadvisor in Dec. 2022. The 20 most reviewed attractions of every of the selected 85 cities were picked, meaning 1,700 tourist attractions and their ratings and reviews were examined.
