the Fire theft ( Rykodisc ) Rating: NN

Rating: NN

Knowing that the Fire Theft involves four ex-members of Sunny Day Real Estate, you’d expect their debut album to be pompous, emo bullshit to the nth degree, and that’s exactly what you get. With help from producer Brad “1994” Wood, they angle for a majestic, solemn and dreamy feel and come close, as long as you can stand the high-pitched whine vox of frontman Jeremy Enigk. If you cannot, the meandering jams interspersed with the yowls of Gwyneth Paltrow’s next boyfriend will kill you with bad vibes. If Enigk has found God, why hasn’t this album been blessed with awesomeness?

The Fire Theft slouch into Lee’s Palace October 11.
