Choir! Choir! Choir! will be spreading some major cheer this winter.
After paying tribute to the late great Leonard Cohen in Christie Pits with hundreds of fans on November 16, the open-participation community choir is gearing up for a busy holiday season.
On December 1, the group will kick off their 25 Days of Charity! Charity! Charity! campaign, donating at least $1,000 each to 25 different charities over the holiday season.
Founders Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman have begun the push with a donation of $12,500, and are asking people to collectively match the amount to reach their goal of at least $25,000.
Donations of $25 or more will get a tax receipt. Charities will be chosen based on the issues most important to choir members, and you can donate directly to the campaign at the Choir! Choir! Choir! website.
Before that, the group will help light the 100-foot tall Eaton Centre Christmas tree – aka Canada’s largest Christmas tree – on November 24 at 6 pm with a rendition of Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World.
It’s an appropriate choice: now more than ever we need a reminder that the world can, in fact, be a wonderful place.
“It’s a song that’s part of the cultural lexicon that people know and love,” says Goldman. “It’s universally acclaimed. It’d be hard for anyone to say anything negative about that song. The message is about positivity and seeing the beauty in things that are all around us all the time in spite of all the negative things that are in the world.”
Choir! Choir! Choir! will also perform at the city’s Cavalcade of Light tree lighting event at Nathan Philips Square on November 26 at 7 pm. That evening’s song choice will be John Lennon’s Imagine and feature guest singers Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet
