DAVID USHER

Rating: NN

The former singer of 90s alt-Canrock shitsters Moist is now five freaking albums into his solo career, yet David Usher seems absolutely incapable of writing anything even remotely interesting. The singer serves up plate after plate of insipid lyrics, going to great lengths to match their mediocrity with his laughable singing voice while sounding pained enough to have retained remnants of teen angst long after the fact. Album opener and first single The Music is, sadly, about as good as it gets here, with a chorus that’d be better suited to a younger Hilary Duff, and the rest of the album thoughtlessly panders to the easy adult rock set. Plus, there’s something awfully dubious about saying New York is your home on MySpace while sucking up Canadian government grant money to finance your disc.

David Usher plays the Mod Club Saturday (March 24).
