Drake and OVO co-founder Oliver El-Khatib played their first Beats 1 show on Apple Music last weekend, and the set list included remixes of two little-known Toronto artists: Roy Wood$ and Ramriddlz.
Wood$, a singer/rapper from Brampton, has released a steady stream of new music on SoundCloud, including a collab with Chicago rapper Dej Loaf, and All Of You, a snarling R&B cut recently remixed by Montreal-based Soulection producer Da-P.
Last week he popped up in Drake’s Energy video, and a day later Drizzy debuted Wood$ song Drama, featuring himself.
Meanwhile, rumours that Drake was about to jump on a remix of Ramriddlz’s feather-light, Drizzy-esque slow jam Sweeterman have been circulating for months. At first it seemed kind of ridic – sample lyric: “She says she want my ba-na-na and she want to give me that ooh-na-na” – but apparently there is no greater form of flattery than imitation. On his version, Drake completely removed the original vocal and put his own twist on that ba-na-na line: “She heard the ting bend like banana / So she wanna give me the adunana-ne.”
In other Drake news, he was all over Wimbledon last week, posing for photos with tennis icon Billie Jean King and getting mercilessly mocked on social media for wearing a sweater tied around his neck, borrowing a page from the Caddyshack Guide To Elitist 80s Fashions.
Apparently, his woefully dated fashion faux pas was so distracting, he nearly upstaged rumoured love interest Serena Williams’s sixth Wimbledon crown.
