Just announced shows: Why you can’t miss TIME Festival’s “day of disparate musical oddities”

An affordable and unpredictable option on Toronto’s increasingly crowded festival calendar continues to be the late-summer TIME Festival.

With so many multi-day music fests here and across North America angling to attract fans from outside the big cities, it’s nice to have a reasonably priced – $30, or $50 for VIP – option conveniently located downtown.

NOW reviewer Liisa Ladouceur called last year’s TIME “a day of disparate musical oddities” – a term that applied to both the lineup and the demographic in attendance: a cross-section of goths, hippies, nerds and thrashers.

The eighth annual edition is similarly eclectic. The headliner is a coup for the day-long event: hip-hop duo Run the Jewels have become bona fide fest favourites since they played Toronto in 2014 in support of their critically adored Run The Jewels 2 album. When Killer Mike hasn’t been too busy stumping for Bernie Sanders, he and El-P have presumably been working on Run The Jewels 3, so expect new material in the set list.

Another must-see act is West Coast R&B singer Kehlani, who recently scored a Grammy nod for last year’s underrated You Should Be Here mixtape. The 21-year-old is basically R&B incarnate. At last summer’s sold-out Mod Club show, she moved effortlessly between ballads, mid-tempo chair-dance routines and club bangers, pausing only to allow security to evacuate a fan who had passed out in the pit.

Other acts include New Zealand pop duo Broods, New York rappers Joey Bada$$, Kirk Knight and Nyck Caution, Vancouver dance group Bob Moses, house/techno producer Kink, darkwavers Cold Cave, Los Angeles beat scenester Tokimonsta and rising Toronto producer Harrison, among others.

At Fort York Garrison Common (100 Garrison) on August 6. Doors at noon, all ages. $30-$50. On sale now. ticketweb.ca.
