San Francisco’s Miguel Migs was largely responsible for that wave of mellow, soulful lounge house that seemed to be everywhere for a while in the late 90s. Your feelings about that era will likely determine whether you’re into Those Things it’s oriented around that sound, with references to other genres thrown in.
It’s a consistent album, perhaps a bit too much to hold your interest all the way through. The best moments are when Migs moves away from his formula with Sadat X’s rap on Shake It Up or the pseudo-reggae of Fire, featuring legendary vocalist Junior Reid.
Migs hits This Is London Friday (July 13).
