Now PUP have their own beer, too

Music history has shown us that many surprising pairings go well together: Elvis’s peanut butter, bacon and banana sandwich Run-DMC and Aerosmith. And then there’s punk rock and cheap swill, which have a relationship so longstanding that it makes Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s marriage look like a fling.

But relationships evolve, and there’s no reason to knock back a lukewarm PBR when you can grab a cool, summery farmhouse ale. Because as PUP drummer Zack Mykula tells NOW, “Beer combines all of the best characteristics of science and drunkenness.”

In the name of science (and drunkenness), the Toronto punk band has joined forces with two other local faves, Great Lakes Brewery and Bar Hop, to create a New World Farmhouse Ale made with a saison/Brett yeast blend and New Zealand hops.

Just try not to drool over Mykula’s description of it. “You’ll find subtle stone fruit and tropical fruit, effervescence and prominent Brett ester character, all while the overall character of the yeast blend combines with the New Zealand hops to create additional pineapple, pear and citrus notes. It’s refreshing and inviting.”

Aptly named The Dream Is Hungover, a nod to PUP’s Polaris Prize-shortlisted sophomore album, The Dream Is Over, the libation will only be available Friday (July 29) at Bar Hop’s 137 Peter Street location. The party starts at 7:30 pm and space (as well as quantities, we assume) are limited.

PUP will be hanging out on a break from another long tour and utilizing their collab creation the way they usually do. Says Mykula, “We’ll pour it down our necks in order to erase our problems.”
