A university in Ontario is offering free tuition to students from two First Nations communities on whose traditional territory the school is located.
Beginning this fall, the University of Waterloo will waive the university fees of incoming and current students of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and Six Nations of the Grand River.
In order to meet the requirements to qualify, First Nations students must be enrolled in full-time undergraduate or graduate programs of any faculty at the University of Waterloo.

The university is also offering Ontario domestic tuition rates for Indigenous students from all over Canada and the U.S. and will continue to waive application fees from those who identify as First Nations, Métis and Inuit, according to the university’s news release.
“This announcement is part of Waterloo’s efforts toward indigenization, decolonization and reconciliation, which are at the heart of the values guiding us as an institution of higher learning,” Vivek Goel, president and vice-chancellor of Waterloo, said in the release.
“We hope that by reducing financial barriers for these students we will encourage them to participate in our innovative academic, entrepreneurship and co-op programs, which increases their future opportunities while strengthening communities and economies,” he continued.
