What to know

  • Canadian reality TV star Dom Gabriel shares his hottest dating opinions in a rapid-fire Q&A with Now Toronto, covering everything from sex timelines to ghosting, dating apps and first-date ideas.
  • Gabriel says emotional connection comes before sex, revealing he usually waits about a month because becoming friends first leads to stronger relationships.
  • His biggest dating dealbreaker is bad breath, and one of his most controversial takes is that he’d rather be ghosted than told the brutal truth after a date.
  • He also prefers coffee dates over dinner dates and says he’d never date someone who watches reality TV.

Nowadays, dating comes with plenty of unwritten rules – Wait three dates before having sex. Never suggest a coffee date. Always give someone closure if you’re not interested. But, Canadian reality TV star Dom Gabriel isn’t buying most of them.

Dom Gabriel has won Perfect Match season one, participated in the second season of the show, won The Traitors Canada season three, and participated in The Mole season one.

Despite appearing in numerous Netflix shows, and trying out Toronto’s dating scene, Dom Gabriel is still single and ready to mingle.

For this edition of This is Dating Now, Now Toronto did a quick rapid fire Q&A with Canadian reality TV star Dom Gabriel on his hottest dating takes.

Three dates before sex?

Dom Gabriel says he typically waits a month.

“I think that makes a relationship way better, to become friends first, and then like, become emotionally intimate. And then there’s more. But yea, wait for it, there’s no need to rush. If you like the person, it will happen eventually,” he told Now Toronto.

What’s your dealbreaker?

Two words: bad breath.

Gabriel recalls a date with someone who he calls gorgeous, but all he can remember is her bad breath.

“I think I still follow her, so it’s like, you’re just going through the stories sometimes, and then you scroll and I’ll be like, bad breath. I remember that,” he said.

Now, he pays extra attention to a dater’s breath.

“I got to get up close real quick just to see if they brush their teeth,” he said.

Would you rather be ghosted, or told the brutal truth?

“Ghosted every time. I’m a big advocate for ghosting. You don’t need closure. You think you want closure, you think you need closure,” he said. “Make up the closure in your head, become delusional and just move the f**k on.”

He uses the dater with bad breath as an example, saying she didn’t need to know she had a bad breath. She might now, seeing the Now Toronto interview, but after seven years, she might only think “Oh, Dom’s a d**k.”

“That’s way better than knowing you have really bad breath. That’s a perfect example of when ghosting is totally appropriate,” Gabriel shares.

“Ghost every time. Don’t tell me anything,” he said.

What’s a hot take fans might not love?

Sorry girls, Gabriel said he would never date someone who watches reality TV.

“From being on shows personally and also in general, I think me and my friends have such a good, clean circle of like, we just don’t gossip or talk about anybody… The entire world is just judging every action that they do before they even do an action. And I wouldn’t want to date someone that enjoys doing that,” he explained.

Gabriel reminds the public that people on shows are also real people, and knows how hurtful the gossip can be.

Coffee or dinner date?

Despite the internet praising dinner dates, Gabriel believes coffee dates are the move.

“I like seeing people, and the sun’s out, the city’s lively,” he said. “I think dinner is always dark, there’s music blasting, and there’s not enough room to talk.”

“Go for a walk, grab a croissant,” he encouraged daters.

Are dating apps saving or ruining dating?

Gabriel has only been on a dating app once, and it ended up in a four-year relationship.

“She was a coworker. I was working at The Drake Hotel. I was a bouncer, she was a server… My coworker was like, “Dude, it’s so sad that you just don’t talk to anyone. You have to get a girlfriend, you have to date somebody,’” Gabriel explained

Then, he took some photos around the hotel to add on his dating profile, and as he was swiping, saw his coworker.

The swipe turned into a match, but it ultimately didn’t work out four years later.

“It didn’t work for me, but maybe it does work [for others],’ he said.
